Kitchen island with wood barstools, greenery swags tied with black ribbon and bells, and black pendant lights

My Christmas kitchen decor is greenery in a few spots instead of a lot of stuff: swags on the barstools, garland on the window and island, a tall vase, a bowl of picks and a couple of small trees. It's simple, warm and festive, just how I like it, and none of it needs a nail.

Christmas kitchen decor starts at the barstools

The sweetest touch of greenery in our kitchen is the swags on our barstools. I love how the cedar greenery pairs with black velvet ribbon and little brass bells for a subtle, timeless holiday look. They instantly make the kitchen feel festive without any extra effort.

Honest detail: the exact pre-made swags I used, Grandin Road's Arched Holiday Swag set, are sold out. To get the look, I'd tie a couple of the greenery picks further down to each stool with velvet ribbon and add a bell. The brass bell set I linked with this kitchen is from Wayfair.

How I hang greenery without nails

I hung the swags on our barstools with 3M Command hooks and zip ties. It's a clean, damage-free way to secure garland without hardware or drilling, and I highly recommend it if you love decorating chairs, barstools or railings without commitment. These adhesive zip tie mounts from Amazon are the ones I linked: stick a mount on the back of the stool, thread a zip tie through and cinch it around the greenery.

For garland around the kitchen window and on the island, I use clear adhesive hooks. No nails, no damage, and they hold all season long. They're in my budget Christmas decor finds.

Garland on the kitchen window and island

Layered garland over the windows, warm wood accessories, open shelving and soft twinkling lights make the kitchen festive without overwhelming it. The pre-lit garland on our kitchen window last year was from Grandin Road, and it's sold out now. The garlands I linked from Darby Creek Trading and Purple Rose & Co are still available.

Darby's draping Norfolk pine comes in a 4-foot length, and the product photo shows two layered for a fuller look, so I'd plan on more than one for a window.

I like mixing cedar in with Norfolk for texture and depth. Every garland I use is compared in the faux garlands I use, and the layering how-to is in how I decorate a Christmas mantel with garland.

A tall vase and a bowl of picks

Two easy spots finish the island and counter. The terracotta vase by our kitchen window is from Afloral, and the wide bowl on our island is the papier mache bowl from Terrain.

To fill a bowl or vase like ours, I'd mix pine and cedar picks from Darby Creek. The long needle pine pick is 24 inches tall with wired stems you can bend or cut, so it works in a tall vase. The cedar, cypress and eucalyptus pick is 14 inches, so it sits low in a bowl.

Small extras for the counter

The woven trees by our sink are the rattan table trees from Wayfair. They add natural texture next to all the greenery.

If you want a little glow on the counter, I'd add pre-lit pinecone stems from Grandin Road to a vase. I love that they're battery-powered with a built-in timer, so there are no cords and no fuss.

Frequently asked questions

Is the greenery in the kitchen real or faux?

It's faux. Darby Creek describes its draping Norfolk garland as real-touch lifelike greenery and its picks as artificial foliage, so you get the look without the mess or the weekly refresh.
