Crate & Barrel was founded by Gordon and Carole Segal, who opened their first store in 1962 in part of an old elevator factory in Chicago's Old Town, displaying imported European housewares on the crates and barrels they shipped in. Now based in Northbrook, Illinois, it sells furniture, housewares and home accessories and is known for showing pieces together in home-like vignettes.
