I’d build a warm neutral tree with champagne, bronze and brown, then add glass for a little light. Good Housekeeping’s Nov 5 holiday report pairs muted earth tones with velvet, wood and woven textures—an approach I’d balance with a few brighter finishes. The Target Wondershop set is shatter-resistant; the World Market honeycomb ornament is blown glass and needs more care.

Champagne and gold

Champagne is where I start. These Target Wondershop tinsel balls are my favorite affordable set — warm, vintage-inspired sparkle, and shatter-resistant. I fill gaps with mercury-look gold from Darby Creek, a honeycomb glass ball from World Market, and the burnished metals and capiz on our living room tree (gifted by Balsam Hill).

Bronze and brown

Bronze keeps a neutral tree from reading flat gold. Darby's bronze mercury-look balls and a feather ball with jute rope are the ones I reach for when I want depth without red.

Brown and antiqued

Brown keeps the tree from reading flat gold. Darby's antiqued spruce green mercury set isn't listed on their site right now, so I'm skipping it — this Wayfair Holiday Aisle ball set is the oversized brown fill I'd use instead (the ones from my warm modern tree look).

Finishing touches: bells, topper and ribbon

The topper on our living room tree is Balsam Hill's Double-Sided Starburst. If you want a smaller gold star, the World Market antique gold mirror star is the other one I've linked (see how I put ribbon on a tree). Add a few bells, then finish with ribbon and pearl picks.

Are shatterproof ornaments worth it?

For me, yes — especially on a bigger tree. The Target Wondershop set is shatter-resistant, so I don't worry as much when I'm reaching into the middle of the branches. Prices change, so check the current listing before you buy.
